The power of Unity on World Labyrinth Day

One step, two steps
silently we slipped into the sacred space of the labyrinth
carried forward by focused intent,
while the world around us is reeling unhinged.
One step, two steps,
one after the other
carefully we moved around the narrow twists and turns
of this ancient stone carved path
marked by those who have gone before us.
Held are we this day
within a world wide energy of unity,
as thousands like us have taken
one step, two steps,
walking the labyrinth slowly,
each carrying his, her or their own dreams
united in peace and purpose.
One step, two steps
we came to the Holy Center
held in everlasting Love and power of the Heart
to pray, to open, to embody our hopes and dreams.
Filled with this experience of world wide connection,
of being as One in heart felt peace and beauty
we move back out into a terrified world
bringing Light into the darkness,
heartfelt Love into pain and confusion.
Step by step our cups runneth over
knowing we are not alone.

With the help of the Cherokee Good Medicine society, we build a 7 circuit labyrinth in the woods surrounding my house in Maryland. Sticks marked a path that was carefully laid out. We had carefully laid it out starting with the labyrinth seed drawing. I remembered seeing drawings on the cliffs of the ancient Anasazi site at Chaco Canyon. This ancient style worked beautifully in the small clearing and with the materials we had available. When I moved to the Cape in December of 2017, I found Pilgrims Landing (now Center for the Spiritual Journey) laid out a canvas with the Chartres Cathedral pattern so that people could come and walk it. I came weekly, centering into this new place I now lived, but knew almost no one. It was only later that I discovered that the Center had worked with the community to build a fabulous Chartres Cathedral labyrinth at Chase Park. It provides a wonderful opportunity to do this sacred walk/prayer outside next to the Peace Garden that they made, celebrating Sky and Earth in direct relationship with community.

The Center offers monthly labyrinth introductions and walks every week in the summer and several other times a year. These are wonderful gatherings of community to walk together on this ancient winding holy trail that leads us to the center of our being for prayer, self reflection and celebration. It offers an opportunity to bring those gifts back out into our community and the world again. Please check out the website for times. www.csjcapecod.org/labyrinth Here you will fine a beautiful description of the labyrinth and its history as well as a map which shows you how to find it.

A Thanksgiving Labyrinth walk

At the Labyrinth’s edge I stand by the big drum,
crafted years ago from an old sycamore trunk, half hollow.
Arduously with mallet and chisel,
I thinned Her out, covered Her with Elk hide, laced Her up.
Today, tapping Her resonant body with a long handled beater,
the heartbeat of Grandmother Earth comes alive,
calling out with thanksgiving
for the countless ways She gives so graciously.
It’s a Giving Circle.
People have brought food for the local pantry
and walk the twists and turns with gratitude in their hearts.
The drum’s deep rich resonance weaves the community lovingly together
sending Heartfelt Peace out into a tattered World.

Come join us!!
