Hildegard von Bingen was a German composer, abbess, mystic, visionary, herbal healer, scientist, poet, and so much more. Living in the 12th century, she challenged boundaries and broke barriers that still resonate with women today. Among her many remarkable legacies, her music remains one of the greatest gifts she left to the world.

Over the course of these four weeks, we will explore Hildegard’s extraordinary life, work, and music, while also discovering music created or inspired by other mystical voices, including Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Olivier Messiaen. Together, we will consider how these composers use music to express mystery, spirituality, nature, and the transcendent—and how their voices continue to speak to our lives today.
