Journeying on Thursdays – Soul Songs with Gail Smith

I meet regularly with a wonderful group of poets through The Center for the Spiritual Journey. We meet once a week to write poetry together and to gently critique one another’s poems.

I never really know what I will write about during our 40-45 minutes of writing.  Sometimes we use prompts to get started. Mostly what I write about comes from a place inside. Something will strike me from that week or that day. The first words come to me as others follow tumbling onto the page. My handwriting is not always legible, so some of my time is spent deciphering what I have written, scribbling more words, erasing others, until the time is up, and I just read what I have written.

Later there may be some more editing until I have a poem to keep and share in one of my small books. I call them “soul songs “because it feels as though it is through my poems that my soul gets to sing.
