What is a Labyrinth?

For thousands of years, labyrinths have been a part of our artistic and spiritual landscape. A labyrinth is an ancient circular pattern, perhaps derived from nature, with a single winding path that provides a meditative walk to the center and back out again. It is not a maze. There are no tricks or dead ends. It is one continuous path.

Labyrinths are often thought to symbolize our journey through life and are a spiritual tool open to all people everywhere. They offer a quiet and meditative place to be still, and can often be a unifying and healing experience.

The pattern has been walked by millions of people of all cultures for many reasons. It is a sacred place set aside for personal reflection, looking within, listening to our intuitive selves and recovering our imaginations. The rhythm of walking, placing one foot in front of the other, helps empty the monkey mind that so many of us experience in contemporary culture.  Walking the labyrinth relaxes the body and refreshes the spirit.
