The retreat will be led by Dr. Richard Hunt, who is an experienced meditator who is not associated with a specific lineage. Rich has been a student of the Diamond Approach for nearly 30 years, and he studied Mahamudra practice with Dr. Dan Brown (co-author of “Transformations of Consciousness, along with Ken Wilbur and Jack Engler), with Dr. Susan Mickel, and with Lama Palden Drolma. He also has some experience sitting Zazen and Vipassana. His approach to meditation draws on all of these influences, but is intended to keep things simple, accessible, and useful for students of any meditative discipline…including those who are just beginning to explore meditation.

We will devote some time to establishing a supportive meditation posture, and then will focus on the establishment of concentration. As we get into the heart of the retreat, we will aim to deepen concentration and will learn how to identify and guard against subtle laxity (a pleasant, rather dreamy state that leads to a practice plateau that persists; it is a somewhat common issue for experienced meditators). Most of our time will be devoted to silent practice together.

Practices will include sitting meditation, walking meditation, and mindful eating. Participants will have opportunities to ask about their practices throughout the retreat, and Rich will help you to address any challenges you encounter. Talking will be kept to a minimum, particularly on Saturday and Sunday, as participants make the practices their own, and to allow the silence to support a deepening of experience.

The Monday orientation/introduction will be on Zoom.  In person meetings will begin with an evening session on Thursday, January 9.  We will enjoy full days of practice on January 10 and 11, and a half day of practice on January 12 from 9:00am – 12pm.  Participants should plan to attend all sessions, barring emergencies.

Participants should bring food to consume during our 1-hour lunch break and snacks they might require. Water, and hot beverages will be provided.
